Early Years

Sons Phil and Tim Warden moved Warden & Sons to Madison in 1971 after Phil completed a BS degree in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin. Two younger brothers, a sister, a brother-in-law, and a wife, joined in over the years.​

Warden & Sons Painting Contractors is a family-owned company serving Madison, Dane County, and Southern Wisconsin since 1971. Our focus is not simply painting homes and buildings—we repair, prepare, restore, and paint them correctly. We specialize in high-quality residential and commercial painting, carpentry repairs, deck restoration, cabinet and woodwork refinishing, historic home restoration, and long-term maintenance painting programs.

Our services include interior and exterior painting, cabinet painting, woodwork refinishing, drywall and plaster repairs, rotten wood repairs, siding and trim repairs, deck restoration and staining, window glazing, wallpaper removal, power washing, commercial maintenance painting, and color and coating consultations. We help homeowners and property managers select the appropriate paints, stains, and coating systems for their specific project, including historic homes, exterior woodwork, decks, siding, trim, cabinetry, and commercial facilities.

Unlike many painting contractors, we perform the carpentry and repair work often required before painting. Our crews regularly repair rotten siding, brick mold, window sills, soffits, fascia, drip edges, deck boards, railings, drywall, plaster, trim, and other damaged building components. This allows our customers to work with a single contractor from preparation through final painting.

Our exterior painting process typically includes cleaning with professional cleaners such as bleach and Jomax when appropriate, scraping loose paint, lead-safe work practices, priming bare surfaces, caulking gaps, completing necessary repairs, and applying premium coatings. We maintain clean, organized job sites and take pride in delivering durable, long-lasting results.

We perform a significant amount of historic home work throughout the Madison area, including wood window restoration, window glazing, plaster repairs, wood siding restoration, and detailed trim work. These specialized skills have become increasingly uncommon and are an important part of our business.

For decks and exterior wood surfaces, we offer professional deck restoration, sanding, staining, and repair services. We help homeowners determine the most appropriate stain system for their deck, including semi-transparent, semi-solid, solid-color, and crack-filling coating systems designed for older wood surfaces. Proper deck preparation, including cleaning and sanding when needed, is a key part of our process.

Our commercial services include maintenance painting and restoration work for factories, manufacturing facilities, warehouses, office buildings, schools, churches, medical and dental offices, assisted living facilities, apartment complexes, condominium associations, and other commercial properties. We also perform wallpaper removal, maintenance repainting, structural steel coatings, storage tank coatings, and other specialized commercial painting projects.
